The following is an interview with a real client who contacted the Center for Effective Therapy to get treatment for their child with ASD.
Can you briefly describe what life was like for your family before receiving outpatient treatment?
My husband and I would constantly argue with our child everyday. And ask ourselves what are we doing wrong? Why is he acting that way? It does not make any sense.
How did you first hear about the Baker Center?
From our doctor's office during a behavioral health check-up.
Do you have anything you would like to share about your overall experience with the Center for Effective Therapy?
We learned new techniques every week. It allowed us to understand our child's actions. This allowed us to understand him better, learn to communicate, so that it does not end up being an argument every time.
How did your clinician make you as a parent feel seen and heard?
Our clinician was wonderful. She would listen to how our week went after utilizing the skills that we have learned and give us advice on what we should do. She made us feel like a team, so that we had the skills to work with our child and to help our child with his anxiety and meltdowns.
How is life different now vs. before treatment for your family?
We now have the knowledge on how to effectively communicate with our child. Although things are not perfect, our relationship with him is better because we understand him more. We have a plan now using the skills that we have learned when he has his meltdowns and know when to actively ignore so that the conversations do not escalate to screaming and yelling. We were lost parents and this program served as a map to guide us through our every day. A very useful tool for parents with neurodivergent children who feel lost.
