David's Story*

David is a child who needed our help. Most kids experience some level of anxiety over returning to school after a long summer break. The idea of getting to know new teachers and classmates, as well as tackling unfamiliar subjects, can be scary. However, for some kids like David, this goes far beyond just typical worries. David was suffering from a condition known as “school refusal” which causes a child to be so overwhelmed by anxiety and fears, that they cannot go to school.

David’s mother, Maria, recalls reaching a breaking point early in the school year and not knowing what to do. “I just couldn’t understand where this was coming from.” said Maria. “We had never had issues going to school before.” Maria was relieved to be connected to the Center for Effective Therapy at the Baker Center and was able to get David seen by one of our expertly trained clinicians.

Through multiple sessions, David was able to identify and overcome his fears. His mother Maria was also able to better understand where David’s anxieties were coming from and how she could help alleviate his symptoms during particularly stressful times at home. With the skills they learned at the Baker Center, David and his mom not only strengthened their bond as parent and child, but also ensured that David has the resources at school that he needs to succeed well into his future.

Heading into school again a year later, both David and his mom feel confident and happy. David was able to utilize the resources at The Baker Center over the summer to make sure he was ready to go back to school. This year, David is thrilled to be back at school and is making lots of new friends!
