Kids who experience unwanted thoughts and engage in rituals or repetitive behavior (including pulling hair and picking skin) may have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or a related challenge, and it may be time to seek help.
Kids with OCD experience unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that cause them to engage in rituals or other repetitive behavior (compulsions) to make the unwanted thoughts go away. This can have a significant impact on their daily life and can cause intense stress and anxiety.
Some kids may obsessively pull out their own hair including eyebrows or other parts of their body. This can lead to a great deal of shame, embarrassment, and physical discomfort. This is also known as trichotillomania.
Some kids may anxiously pick at the skin of their fingers, arms, or other parts of their body. Aside from being rooted in anxiety and obsessive-compulsive behavior, this can also be physically painful. This is also known as excoriation.
