Therapist Certification Requirements
View the steps needed to become a certified MATCH therapist.
The Modular Approach to Therapy for Children (MATCH) is an evidence-based modular CBT intervention designed to treat co-occurring symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, and disruptive behavior, rather than focusing on a single diagnosis. Therapists trained in this approach can treat over 70% of youth seen in typical outpatient settings. MATCH is composed of 33 modules based on decades of research. Organized within flowcharts to guide clinical decision-making, these flexible modules allow clinicians to tailor treatment toward each child’s specific needs. MATCH can easily shift focus from one disorder to another (e.g., shift from anxiety to depression). Throughout the program, kids and families learn skills and build a toolkit of cognitive and behavioral strategies, scientifically proven to help.
MATCH is designed for kids and teens aged 6 to 17 who are experiencing anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and behavioral problems. MATCH is flexible and can be individualized to support kids and families who are experiencing one or more of these challenges.
MATCH works! Research has shown MATCH is associated with:
The National Child Traumatic Stress Network recognizes MATCH as a trauma-informed treatment. The California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare gives MATCH the highest rating for scientific support.
Certified MATCH clinicians are eligible to train as MATCH supervisors. MATCH supervisors can run within agency MATCH training and consultation groups, supporting sustainable MATCH implementation in the long-term and creating professional development pathways for clinicians.
MATCH training covers each MATCH module as well as foundational skills such as assessment and target selection, applying MATCH to different populations, and progress monitoring. This highly interactive training uses adult learning principles, including didactic training, audio and video case vignettes, direct modeling by trainers, activities, and coached role-plays that allow trainees to practice skills with immediate expert feedback. All MATCH materials (e.g., manual, handouts, worksheets) are provided as part of the training.
Trainees are required to be mental health clinicians who have completed or are currently enrolled in a clinically-oriented Master’s or Doctoral program and who work with youth ages 6-17. Licensed clinicians can receive CE’s for the didactic training.
I learned a ton about sequencing of treatment, monitoring progress, using info to make decisions.
I honestly feel that this changes so much about my clinical practice, including how I formulate cases and readiness to discharge.
I hope MATCH becomes a foundational practice at my agency for all clinicians, especially for new clinicians.
MATCH helped me to stay more organized which made me feel more confident. I see the faster change in my clients
